Director James Strong is set to direct a new film focused on the life of Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien.
Entitled Middle Earth, the film will chronicle Tolkien’s early life and examine the events that led him to create the series of novels that place The Hobbit and Lord of the Ring in Middle-earth. The film’s early content depicts Tolkien’s love affair with his future wife Edith Bratt and his career as a professor at Oxford University. Strong also addresses Tolkien’s life during World War I, at which point he left Oxford University and his wife in order to join the British army. Interview and research sources indicate that the four years Tolkien spent in the war heavily influenced his imagination and planted the initial seeds for the creation of Middle-earth and the books that take place there.
Angus Fletcher penned the script for Middle Earth based on six years of interviews and research into Tolkien’s life. The material includes an abundance of information not widely known to the general public, such as the author’s experiences with loss and severe health complications during the war. Protagonist Pictures will handle worldwide distribution and Lord of the Rings executives Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne will serve as executive producers for the film.
